Ponting, and other members of the expedition, panoramas and maps. A very good copy. Publishers blue cloth with gilt lettered to front boards and spines. Top edges gilt. A few faint streaks to the spine of volume one and couple of small abrasions to outer edges of the front board on volume two but overall a very good bright set.:

Anderson, was orignally published in 1799. Six full page engravings, including portrait frontis of Cook. Complete. Previous owners named scratched out on the title page, without any loss to the page. Bound in contemporary full reversed calf. Spine with raised bands, ruled in blind. Red title label, ruled and lettered in gilt. Loss to the top f the spine, exposing the headband, which is loose. 2 inch chip to the top of the front blank endpaper. Overall avery good copy in an early calf binding. :

Walter Herries (or Harris) was a pamphleteer who participated in the first Darien "adventure." Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."

This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.

Short closed tear to margin of 5/6. Historic staining to lower corner margin with some fragmenting to the edge of a few pages. Light shelfwear to marbled boards. Bookplate to fep.

Small octavo : pp. 4 blank (28) 436, 2 blank : new eps : gilt dentelles with floral motif : polished calf boards with triple gilt ruled border surrounding a floral and foliate border : rebacked with red leather title panel lettered in gilt and the publication year in gilt to tail of spine. Long note in small hand to first blank detailing the purchase of the volume in 1840 and some notes on the poet : trimmed at the head of the leaves : corners slightly rounded and gilt worn in patches but mostly bright. Thomas Randolph (1605-1635) was a poet, playwright and wit of great promise who was expected by many to become poet laureate after his mentor Ben Johnson. Jacobi Gronovil, 1721. Hardcover. Fair. Bound in calf-skin vellum-- spine has 6 ridges with the words TACITUS Curante GRONOVIO (clearly done with quill and ink). It appears some text has worn away below this. The leather binding is an ivory color, more discolored along the spine, where it has begun to wear away at 2 of the ridges. Front and back are embossed with floral diamond design-- shows signs of shelfwear but nothing the sturdy vellum wouldn't handle. The binding is tight. Outer edges of pages very brown with age, dust and sun. Based on other book descriptions, I believe this is volume one of a two volume set. There's some foxing throughout the book, and yellowing around the edges of pages, as would be expected of a book this age. Paper is thicker than paper of later books, and you can see that each letter in the text was arranged by a typesetter.
