Description
Paris: Migeon, 1858. Original. Map. Very Good. A very attractive early example of this page map accompanied by its description page from the 1850's Migeon atlas, La France et ses Colonies. Both are printed single sided and the map is very nicely hand colored. Text in French. Paper size: approximately 13.75 by 10.25 inches (35 by 26 cm), with roughness near margin where it was detached from binding; printed area is approximately 8.75 by 7 inches (22.25 by 17.75 cm), although this varies slightly from map to map. Margins are nice and wide which allows for a great deal of flexibility in framing and display. Page maps are undated, but the edition has been dated by the fold-out map in the rear, and by comparing demographic information against historical records. Condition: As with all the maps from this atlas, there is general aging to paper and some edge wear. Some spotting or age darkened spots to the margins. Overall this map is clean and unmarked, and the accompanying text page is intact and legible as well. This atlas had maps of all the French Departments and overseas possessions of the time. Vuillemin's maps are noted for the extensive margin illustrations - vignettes, famous people, and views of cities. Each map was titled with a different font, and the fonts, decorations and marginalia often changed with each subsequent edition. Similar maps were printed in both larger and smaller versions over the years. Full name of the Atlas (accents and foreign characters removed for the internet) is "La France et ses Colonies: Atlas illustre cent cartes dressees d'apres les cartes de Cassini, du Depot de la guerre, des Ponts-et-chaussees et de la Marine par Vuillemin.
