Gold stamped spine titles. B&W author photo portrait frontispiece. 256 p. Audience: General/trade. Post World War II account of returning to exploration of Africa, after being at war and a prisoner of the Japanese. His experiences changed his direction away from a life motivated by personal gain. In 1949, he set out for Nyasaland and its mountains, then set between Northern Rhodesia and Tanganyika, with bordering Portuguese East Africa. All then under colonial rule, Nyasaland had been neglected. He would explore. Maps illustrate his routes. Lauren's van der Post and writer Ingaret Giffard (pen name Isak Dinesen) did much to describe their 20th century Africa for readers.
