About This Item

Chesney's comprehensive survey of the Victorian Underworld is an eye opening adventure into a shockingly different realm. As reviewer Kenneth Allsop put it: 'hordes of characters throng across Mr Chesney's huge and teeming stage… the value of his panorama of a hell more sulphurous than the preachers envisioned, is its scale of research and construction.' Chesney treats us to a wide range of remarkable events and statistics which offer a cause and effect philosophy of 19th century violence, its rise, its nature, and its gradual disappearance. In this way the author shows us how the world of criminals and the poor was always a function of society at large.

An excellent copy. Pages are clean, bright and unmarked with no spots, fading or creases. Seems unread, in near mint state. Cloth boards are tight and clean. DJ unclipped, and in first class condition with only the very most minor shelf wear at top spine. All now protected in professional clear removable book wrapper.

398pp with bibliography, notes, glossary, index and B&W illustrations
