About This Item
London, 1849. xxiv,512pp. plus 6pp. of advertisements and errata slip. Modern half calf and marbled boards, leather label. Very good. A classic work in the theory of colonization, the culmination of Wakefield's attempt at a theory of colonization based upon scientific principles. His ideas influenced colonial officials and practices in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and in the latter place Wakefield was instrumental in establishing a permanent British colony. "The importance of Wakefield's achievements in colonial matters can hardly be overestimated. The tangible fruits of his labours are the least part of their result, for all subsequent colonial development has followed the direction of his thought" - DNB. FERGUSON 5235. DNB XX, pp.449-52
