About the author

C. Eugene Scruggs, a native of Alabama, is retired from university-level teaching and administration after a career of forty years. During those years he taught at the University of Kentucky, Appalachian State University, Eastern Kentucky University, and the University of South Florida. He held visiting positions with the University of Paris and Cambridge University and directed dozens of overseas programs for college-level students. Dr. Scruggs holds the rank of professor emeritus from the University of South Florida. In 2003 the prime minister of France awarded Prof. Scruggs the rank of Chevalier in the prestigious Order of Palmes Acadmiques for his contribution to a better understanding of French culture and civilization. In 2009 Prof. Scruggs was presented the Distinguished Achievement Award by the president of Transylvania University (Lexington, KY). Dr. Scruggs has authored books and numerous articles on such diverse topics as French civilization, international education, Confederate history, linguistics, and life in the rural South in the mid-twentieth century. Prof. Scruggs and his wife, La Donna, currently divide their time between Hendersonville, N.C. and Lakeland, Florida. He can be reached at his e-mail address: scruggsgene@aol.com
