London: T. McLean, 1841.. FIRST EDITION. Folio (54 x 38 cm). Original quarter red morocco over green moire cloth boards titled in gilt to upper cover and spine, loosely inserted a bifoliate (33 x 21 cm.) prospectus for the book with title, description of each plate and list of subscribers. Title with lithographed vignette, list of subjects and 25 lithographed plates. Neat repairs to spine ends, inoffensive hairline fracture to top right of upper cover, occasional minor spotting to outer margins, generally a very good clean copy. The first of Lear's travel books. Beginning in 1837 Lear spent several winters in Italy. "Views of Rome" records his first impressions of the land that was to become a second home to him. In these panoramic lithographs he is more concerned with the dramatic scenery around Rome than with the Holy City itself.
