Illustrated with B&W glossy plates. This is a murder mystery, set on the French Riviera. It is based on an actual French murder case. The story became Mason's most successful novel of his lifetime. He is best remembered for his 1902 novel of courage and cowardice in wartime, The Four Feathers, and is also known as the creator of Inspector Hanaud, first appearing in this novel. Hanaud is a French detective who was an early template for Agatha Christie's famous Hercule Poirot. .
