Description

Belleville, Ontario: Mika Publishing, 1988. 160 pp, 11 5/8" H. Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, map. "Illustrated with scenes of early settler's activities carried out by the 'inhabitants' of Upper Canada Village, the book in story and picture links the present to the past and invites you back into the 19th century. How did this village come to be? In the 1950's, the building of a major hydro electric power plant on the St. Lawrence threatened to destroy nearly two centuries of Eastern Ontario heritage. Eight villages and some 35 miles of riverfront were flooded as a result of the St. Lawrence Seaway project. Saved from the overflowing (river), buildings and artifacts were collected and Upper Canada Village was created to represent a typical riverfront community in the days just prior to Confederation in 1867. Today Upper Canada Village exists as a new and planned community of historically significant homes and buildings, opening for study and observation that time period when pioneer immigrants shaped Upper Canada from hostile wilderness into a settled, thriving province." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of front hinge. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds - very minor wrinkling elsewhere.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good+/Very Good.
