London: for W. Mears,, 1727. Promoting viticulture in Britain First edition of this viticultural treatise, including the first detailed description in English of wine-making in Champagne, based on first-hand observation. The author supports the establishment of vineyards in Britain, opposing those who declare the climate too insalubrious, and provides a guide to the cultivation of the vine. The dedication is signed "S.J." but Blanche Henry tentatively attributes it to the botanical writer Richard Bradley (1688-1732), primarily as the publisher, Mears, was associated with a number of Bradley's books. The book is dedicated to Bradley's most munificent patron, James Brydges, first duke of Chandos, though it is therefore unclear why Bradley should adopt a pseudonym for it. The work was reissued as a second edition in 1732, with a cancel title page. Provenance: with the bookplate of William Gilstrap (1816-1896), son of the wine merchant Joseph Gilstrap (1785-1864); Gilstrap worked initially in the wine trade, but was soon attracted to malting, where he would partner with Thomas Earp to become the largest malter in Britain. Octavo (194 x 118 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, spine with red morocco label and gilt motifs to compartments, red speckled edges. Engraved frontispiece by H. Fletcher after R. Cooper, woodcut illustration on p. 83. Contemporary ownership signature to title page partly crossed through, armorial bookplate of William Gilstrap to front pastedown, pencilled markings to rear endpaper. Joints and extremities expertly repaired, tiny chip at head of front free endpaper and at foot of frontispiece, small wax stain to lower margin of the first gathering, thereafter contents clean. An excellent copy. Gabler G40200; Henrey II, p. 450 and III, 870; Kress 3727; ESTC T123772.

Description:
First edition, a copy of notable provenance, of perhaps the most successful early Spanish translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses, by Pedro Sánchez de Viana (1545–1616), published along with his substantial commentary. In the age of Cervantes (another master of literary transformations), Ovid exerted wide and lasting influence on Spanish literature, uniquely able, among the Latin poets, to echo and clothe in myth and beauty the ambitions and anxieties of a generation of poets caught in a world of deep change. The re-elaboration of themes such as madness, desire, doubt, and self-knowledge in Cervantes and his contemporaries rely on Ovid's imagery and language, and de Viana's translation proved an important cultural transposition. Set out in hendecasyllables in alternate rhyme, the text itself is vivid and memorable. It is the commentary, however, which especially commands attention: sources for interpretation range from classical writers to Medieval scholastics, to more recent philologists including… Read More
