In 1957 the English-speaking peoples velebrate the three hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, the first permanent English colomny in North America, and this book tells the Jamestown story. It is one of the greatest adventure stories in History. it began in 1584 when Walter Raleigh, who dreamt of an English colony beyond the seas, sent out two captains, Arthur Barlow and Philip Amadas, on ther first voyage to the unexplored part of the New World where they discovered the country now called Virginia. What they found, what they saw, and what befell the peioneers and colonists who followed them, is told in contemporary narratives by Arthur Barlowe, Sir Richard Grencille, John Whote, Thomas Harriot, and Captain John Smith.
