About this book

Longfellow began publishing his poetry in 1839, including the collection Voices of the Night, his debut book of poetry. The bulk of Voices of the Night was translations, though he also included nine original poems and seven poems that he had written as a teenager. Ballads and Other Poems was published in 1841 and included "The Village Blacksmith" and "The Wreck of the Hesperus", which were instantly popular.

John Owen Published a First Edition in Cambridge, 1839. The hardcover is bound in brown Morocco leather with a gilt-ruled spine.


David Bogue published a First UK Edition in London, 1852. The hardcover is bound in half-morocco with a gilt ruled spine. The boards are covered in marbled paper. Illustrated by Jane E. Benham, Birket Foster.


Hurst & Co Publishers published a First Edition in New York, circa 1900. Characterized by padded decorative leather boards with gilt titling and gilded page edges.
