With a description of the Country, Manners, Customs, Religion &c. of the Natives by the Celebrated George Barrington. To which is added his Life and Trial. 2 WORKS BOUND TOGETHER, 1795 and 1801. A VOYAGE TO BOTANY BAY: Foreword dated "Parramatta November 1793". Small 8vo, bound in sixes, approximately 175 x 100 mm, 7 x 4 inches, engraved frontispiece titled 'An Interesting Discovery in the Woods', vignette on engraved title page (prisoners landing at Sydney Cove), pages: title page, [2], [3]-120. Two 19th century and one 20th century signatures on reverse of frontispiece, no show-through, light offsetting from frontispiece onto title page, fore-edge margin of frontispiece, title page and some pages within slightly trimmed, occasional small very pale marks or pale stains. BOUND WITH: A SEQUEL TO BARRINGTON'S VOYAGE TO NEW SOUTH WALES, 1801, comprising an interesting narrative of the transactions and behaviour of the convicts; the progress of the colony; an official register of the crimes, trials, sentences, and executions that have taken place: a topographical, physical, and moral account of the country, manners, customs &c. of the natives, - as likewise authentic anecdotes of the most distinguished characters, and notorious convicts that have been transported to the settlement at New South Wales. Same imprint with title page dated 1801, bound in sixes, pages: viii, [5]-88, [6], collated and guaranteed complete, the final 6 pages contain An official register of the crimes .. of the convicts in New South-Wales. Occasional pale foxing otherwise very good. Bound together in full modern mottled calf, gilt patterned border to covers, gilt raised bands to spine, richly gilt in compartments, gilt lettered red morocco title label, new endpapers. George Barrington (1755-1804) was a notorious criminal known as 'The Prince of Pickpockets'. He served several sentences on board the prison hulks at Woolwich before being transported to Australia, where he later became Superintendent of Convicts and High Constable in New South Wales. It is unlikely that he had any part in the authorship of this pamphlet but the publishers used his name to lend authenticity and interest to the accounts of Australia that they were putting out including considerable detail on18th New South Wales not available elsewhere. See Ferguson, Bibliography of Australia, Volume I, page 81, Nos. 205 & 206, Foreword dated "Parramatta November 1793" and chapters x-xii wrongly numbered ix, xii, xiv as No. 205 but publisher and collation as No. 206. See: page 125, No.328 for Sequel: Jonathan Wantrup, Australian Rare Books 1788-1900, pages 86-87. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.

Hulme, Keri: The Bone People. Louisiana State University Press, A tale of New Zealand. Stated United States First Edition, 1985. 450 pages, indexed. WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
