Four vols, 8vo, copper-engraved portrait of Captain James Cook as frontispiece, folding chart and 48 copper plates (some folding), including a folding plate titled 'The Death of Captain James Cook, F.R.S. at Owhyhee in MDCCLXXIX', lacks large folding map and list of plates, light dampstaining, contemporary polished calf gilt, neatly rebacked preserving spines.
The first octavo edition of Cook's Third Voyage and the first to reach a wide audience. The text is slightly abridged from the quarto edition, omitting some technical navigation material. The plates are re-engraved in smaller format.
