1767. London. J. and F. Newbery. In 8vo (202 mm x 121 mm). 1 [blank] + 2 nn + 186 + 1 [blank]. Contemporary calf gilt, boards with double gilt fillet, inner dentelle gilt, rebacked preserving spine, red morocco title label, slightly worn with a few pieces missing. Minor spotting and foxing as often, offsetting on folios facing plates, contemporary notes on first blank, else fine.First edition of an account of the voyage of the Dolphin. Said to be the fastest circumnavigation to date of a voyage destined mostly to the East Indies but which true object was to make discoveries in the South Seas -New Albion on the American North West coast amongst others. Byron (1723 – 1786) sailed in 1764 in the Dolphin with junior officers Charles Clerke and John Gore. Both Clerke and Gore later sailed with James Cook, with Clerke taking command of the final voyage after Cook's death. Byron visited Brazil and then continued south through severe storms and ice for Patagonia and through the Strait of Magellan, relating one of the best accounts of the Strait to date –from this part of the voyage, he earned the name 'Foul-Weather Jack'. The expedition was searching for rumored islands and in the process identified a few new off the Falklands before being forced back to the Strait by storms. Ashore in Patagonia, he reported on the eight-foot tall Indians he found there (the famous meeting is shown in the frontispiece), and finally sighted the Falklands. He claimed them for England, unaware that Bougainville had recently claimed them for France. Ignoring his instructions to sail for New Albion, he headed for Juan Fernandez and the Tuamotus, where he discovered Danger Island and others in the Tokelaus and Gilberts before making for the Philippines, Sumatra, Cape of Good Hope and then home to England. Although no significant discoveries were made, thanks to the speed of the voyage, no men were lost to scurvy, the Falklands were secured for England and the Admiralty was stirred to make further exploratory voyages into the South Pacific. Illustrated with a frontispiece “A sailor giving a Patagonian Woman some Biscuit for her Child” and two more plates. Appended are Byron's notes on the Patagonians and earlier first-hand accounts of them by Magellan, Cavendish and others. The work has often been ascribed to midshipman Charles Clerke. Provenance, from the Wolfgang A. Herz library, his ex libris on front pastedown.Sabin, 9732. Hill, 313. Borba de Moraes, I 138.

Description:
London: John Murray, 1824. First Edition. Parry was of the opinion that the Northwest Passage could probably be reached through Hudson's Bay. In 1821, he set out to investigate that possibility and to link up with John Franklin's overland expedition to the Coppermine River, and down to Coronation Gulf. He sailed through Hudson and Frozen Straits, explored Repulse Bay and proceeded west and north to Lyon Inlet. He passed the winter at Winter Island and then resumed his northward voyage, discovering Fury and Hecla Strait. The second winter was spent at Igloolik Island off the northeast coast of the Melville Peninsula. This account of the voyage and explorations conducted contains much information regarding the characteristics and social life of the Esquimaux of the region. Most of the plates, after drawings by Captain Lyon, illustrate the domestic life of the Esquimaux, their fishing and hunting practices, dwellings and tools, &c. An Esquimaux vocabulary is also included. Arctic Bib. 13142.… Read More

Modern half brown polished calf by Atkinson, Salisbury, retaining bookplate of Captain Sir Elwyn Francis Stanhope, Bart., Royal Navy. Owner signature of Nathaniel Cowrah his book, 1809. Very good copy, handsomely bound, in marbled slipcase. First edition. iv, [5]-93, [1, blank] pp. 1 vols. 12mo. This Journal of the circumnavigation of the Dolphin in 1764-6 starts out as a seafaring account of travel from Plymouth to Madeira to Brazil, and the claiming of the Falkland Islands for the British crown, but on page 21 when the Dolphin rounds Cape Virgin Mary on Tierra del Fuego and the Patagonians are sighted, the text becomes an imaginary utopian narrative. The Patagonians are described as ten feet tall, riding upon horses fifteen feet tall, and "their very old age is about two hundred and ten, when their strength fails". There is a description of the Patagonian metropolis,… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
