Vols. I & I." IThe American minister Fitch Waterman Taylor (1803 – 1865) received the appointment of Chaplain in the U. S. Navy in 1841, a position he held for twenty-four years. In the course of his sea service he made a voyage around the world on the USS Columbia, about which he wrote this account. This ship was later scuttled and burned by Union forces to avoid its capture by Confederates at the beginning of the Civil War in April 1861.
