James Cook was an 18th-century British explorer known for these three major world voyages. His second voyage, which was supported by the British government, was set out to circumnavigate the world by means of going as far south as possible. This voyage, which is significantly less reported on than his third and final voyage, took Cook to locations such as Easter Island, Tahiti, and the Arctic Circle – Cook became the first to cross the Arctic Circle. Perhaps the most important discovery from this voyage was proving that no continent existed between New Zealand and South America – a common theory amongst centuries of European navigators and historians.
This complete first edition is an exceptional work! It is supplemented with 63 engravings, some double-page and folding, depicting his adventures in the Southern hemisphere.
