About This Item
On the French side, Stanisiaw Leszczynski, whose daughter was married to King Louis XV, was offered the post. Russia and Austria insisted that the Polish throne be taken by German Prince Friedrich August II. Russian troops entered Poland, but the Warsaw Sejm preferred Leszczynski. In the lands occupied by Russian troops, Polish nobles elected Friedrich August II as King, and a war broke out that ended with the victory of the Russian army and the accession to the throne of Friedrich August II (King August III).
