About This Item
London: Elliot Stock, 1894. First Edition. 16mo. 264 pages, [2] pp. publisher's ads, index. One of the more important historians of the literature of fishing and written in a delightful style tracing the earliest usages of fishing a contemplation (he cites a reference before Walton), and many references in the late Middle Ages. As an interesting aside he notes that in the 18th century, first editions sold for less than 5 pounds, but in his own era, fine copies were selling over 300 pounds and the sad lament was that now all good copies would end up in America. He finishes up with the views of Sir Walter Scott and James Russell Lowell. A nice copy of the first edition with the title page in red and black. Bound inn green cloth over beveled boards, lettered and stamped in gilt, spine lettering gilt, rubbing to spine ends and joints, head with a very minute closed tear. Bookplate of Frederic Bessant Williams.
