Halifax: Milner and Sowerby, 1860. Cloth. Good. 5.5" by 3.5". George Measom. An early pocket-sized edition of this colonial novel by the popular nineteenth century author John Beauchamp Jones. An uncommon early edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with pictorial gilt to the spine.Ink inscription to the front free end paper, dated 1868. John Beauchamp Jones (1810-1866) was a popular mid-nineteenth-century novelist, a literary editor and a political journalist in the two decades leading up to the American Civil War. He is best remembered for his diary, published as A Rebel War Clerk's Diary at the Confederate States Capital. Many of his novels feature colonial themes, including this one, and are set in the American West and the American South. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound, with shelf wear to the spine, joints and extremities. Front hinge is partially detached, with one cord holding it to the tail. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
