About This Item

See Sharp Press, 2006. Pamphlet. Very Good. Unmarked. 8p. Measures 5.5x8.5 inches. During the Philippine-American War, Twain wrote a short pacifist story titled The War Prayer, which makes the point that humanism and Christianity's preaching of love are incompatible with the conduct of war. It was submitted to Harper's Bazaar for publication, but on March 22, 1905, the magazine rejected the story as "not quite suited to a woman's magazine".

Reviews

On Mar 24 2016, a reader said:
A scathing indictment of war in Twain's inimitable satirical style. He refused to let this be published during his lifetime for fear of offending his religious family members, but never expected it would take so long to see the light of day. A must-read and an essential for Twain collectors.
