About This Item
London, England: Frederick Warne & Co., 1893. New Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. A new (1893) edition of this bestselling book (orig. from the 1860s) of cooking & household management for the late-19th-century English "lady of the house," upon whom "devolves the task of providing food to her household.[taking] care that no waste or ignorant misuse shall squander the property of her husband.[nor any] neglect caused by the love of idle pleasure." Guidelines are provided for bill paying, treating servants, marketing, & maintaining "good temper & patience" in all matters. This edition boasts "nearly 3,000" (2,835) recipes, many demonstrating different &/or more economical ways of preparing the same dish, with "coloured illustrations" throughout the 728 pages + additional pages of period advertisements in front & rear. With deep green cloth-covered boards blindstamped with an image of a house to front & lettered in gilt to spine, this hardcover 8vo is in VG condition: generally quite clean, with random spotting & soil. Binding secure but a bit shaken; rear hinge is cracked & gutter split on verso of frontispiece. Pages creamy white with moderate tanning & a few foxed spots; former owner's name & "1894" date to ffep, else unmarked. Mild rubbing to extremities, heaviest at corners & both ends of spine. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have!
