Description

London: W. H. Allen & Co, 1887. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, first issue. 12mo. viii, 166, [2], and 48 page publisher's catalogue (44 [4]pp.) at the back dated: November 1887. Publisher's printed pictorial paper-covered boards. From the library of C. J. Peacock, with his attractive bookplate on the front pastedown. Later owner's name in ink on front free endpaper of bibliophile William A. Oliver, Jr., a Charles Dickens collector and scholar of Victorian literature. Pictorial covers are lightly dust soiled, with some tanning to spine and scattered foxing on back cover, partial light cracking along the joints, front cover corner tips lightly bumped, free endpapers are toned, a very good copy overall. A study of *The Mystery of Edwin Drood* by Charles Dickens: "Presents an excellent case for the resurrection of Drood ... Proctor's study was the center of controversy for several decades" (*Cox* 1164). Uncommon in the pictorial paper-covered boards (issued with earliest publisher's ads). A pleasing copy with Peacock's beautiful bookplate. *Podeschi* H375; *Cox* 1124; *Sadleir* 707.
