About This Item

New York: Random House, 1955. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Author. Schulberg, Budd. WATERFRONT. Signed Presentation Copy. New York: Random House, 1955. First edition. 8vo., 322pp. A near fine copy in dust jacket designed by Jerome Kuhl showing minimal use. Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front free endpaper: "For Bill & Hanna Ecker / Kindest personal regards / Budd Schulberg". An important novel, Waterfront is an equal to Schulberg's What Makes Sammy Run & The Disenchanted. Schulberg wrote the 1954 Academy Award winning screenplay for "On The Waterfront" on which the book is based & which also won Best Picture for a total of 8 Oscars. The film directed by Elia Kazan, about mob violence & corruption among longshoremen, has become a standard of its kind. It stared Eva Marie Saint, Rod Steiger, Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb & with Marlon Brando in his Academy Award-winning role as ex-boxer, Terry Malloy. "I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender, instead of a bum". The film was based on a series of articles written in the New York Sun by Malcolm Johnson.
