Signed in blue 'Yours Sincerely / Richard Adams' to the verso of the half-title (facing the title page). Contents very clean and fresh. However, there is some slight damage as you open the book: the front free endpaper is creased, and discoloured where there is a repair to its leading edge; and a little residue has transferred to the back of the frontis, and shows through as a darkish patch and slight sheen at the edge of the illustration. In the original quarter binding of ivory paper-covered boards with a brown cloth spine titled and decorated in black and ruled gilt. Very bright and clean, with slight wear to the cloth at the top edge of the upper board, and the foot of the spine is blunted. In the renovated and protected wraparound pictorial dust jacket. The upper and lower panels are good, the joints are scuffed, and the spine is sunned. Chips to some edges have been professionally made good: stains from former sellotape repairs are visible chiefly at the head of the spine and at two of the corners. Housed in the bright and firm slipcase, which has the same wraparound illustration as the jacket, with upper and lower ends of brown cloth. A beautiful edition of terrific tale, and a very nice signed copy.
