They were the most popular and widely read novels in Europe for almost a century. The series was titled Waverley, after the first novel of the series, as Scott did not claim authorship until 1827. Prior to Scott's acknowledgement of his authorship the novels were stated as 'by the author of Waverley' to their title pages. Sir Walter Scott was a historical novelist, playwright and poet. Aside from his writings he was an advocate, judge and legal administrator. In half morocco bindings with gilt stamping to the spine. Externally, very smart with some light rubbing to the heads and tails of spines. Rubbing to boards of volume XXV and XV. Internally, volumes VII, IX and XVIII are generally firmly bound but strained in places with the remaining volumes firmly bound. Cockling to pages of volumes XVI-XXV due to damp staining. Pages are generally bright with small tidemarks to the head of pages and outer margins to volumes XI-XXV, does not affect text. Volumes I-X are generally clean. Very Good

Synopsis

The Waverley Novels are a long series of novels by Sir Walter Scott, a Scottish writer and historian. For nearly a century, they were among the most popular and widely read novels in all of Europe. Scott did not publicly acknowledge authorship until 1827, causing the series to take its name from Waverley, the first novel of the series published in 1814. The later books bore the words "by the author of Waverley" on their title pages. The Tales of my Landlord sub-series was not advertised as "by the author of Waverley" and as a result not always included as part of the Waverley Novels series.
