NY: E.B. Treat & Co, 1867. First edition. 8vo. 601, (2, publisher's ads) pp. Illustrated, plates, portraits. Confederate Brigadier General Francis T. Nichols' copy, with his ownership signature at the head of the title page, dated "Assumption" (the Louisiana parish where Nichols practiced law), and "July 1867" [or 1869?]; Nichols (1834-1912; Governor of Louisiana, 1877-1880 and 1888-1892) commanded a brigade of Louisiana infantry at Chancellorsville where he was severely wounded. Howes C-735. Nevins I, p. 74: "Cooke's most famous volume and the closest thing to an autobiography of his war career; much information on Jackson, Stuart, and other Confederate leaders." Dornbusch II, 2665. South to Posterity, p. 221. Old tideline through lower half of text, interior soiling, a good copy with a nice association.
