Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1862. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Near Fine+. First Printing, Second Issue, of Thoreau's first book. Crown 8vo (192 x 113mm): 413,[3], including terminal advertisement, "Will Soon Be Published Walden, or Life in the Woods," which the binder neglected to remove. Publisher's plum TR cloth (BAL binding D; Borst binding 2), covers blind-stamped at center with quatrefoil enclosing Maltese cross, buff end papers, spine lettered in gilt. Contemporary ex libris of J. L. James on fly leaf. Spine sunned but lettering legible, else an excellent example, binding tight, pages clean throughout. BAL 20104. Borst A1.1.a2. Allen, pp. 2-6. Jones, pp. 37-43. Adams, Papers Bibliographical Society of America, Vol. 43, No. 1, pp. 39-47. Johnson (High Spots), p. 73. Recollection of a seven-day boat voyage on calm New England waters, which Thoreau uses "as background of nature study, human study, reflections on history, and philosophic observation, all blended together with charm and even power." (Johnson) Now considered a classic, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers was originally one of the most famous failures in publishing. One thousand copies were printed in 1849 "at the author's risk." Of these, 75 were given away and 219 sold, leaving 706 copies, which were returned to the author on October 28, 1853. Thoreau piled up the copies (256 bound and 450 in sheets) on one side of his bed chamber, noting in his Journal: "I have now a library of nearly nine hundred volumes, over seven hundred of which I wrote myself." In 1862, Ticknor and Field bought many of the remaining copies (145 bound and 450 unbound, including our copy) from Thoreau and reissued the book with a new title page. And so, as others have noted, whoever owns a copy of this issue owns a copy once in Thoreau's library. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. (Fine Editions Ltd is a member of the Independent Online Booksellers Association, and we subscribe to its codes of ethics.).

New York: Harper & Row, 1968. First Edition, as stated. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition (so stated) of the author's first book published in English translation, a novella and eight short stories. 8vo: [4],170pp. Publisher's quarter-bound brick-red cloth stamped in burgundy, mustard paper-covered boards, fore-edge untrimmed, boldly patterned end papers, illustrated dust jacket priced $5.95. Virtually pristine, an exemplary example, apparently unread, showing all first-issue points ('H-S' code on copyright page, without number line on terminal leaf), in a bright, nearly flawless first-issue jacket (Jerry Bauer credited for photograph of the author on the back panel, date code 0968 on front flap), with just mild toning to top of back panel and minute, nearly unnoticeable rub at the front spine-panel fold. Truly a collector's copy. Written between 1956 and 1957 and first published in 1961, the title novella (the book also includes a second, longer novella, Big Mama's Funeral) tells the story of an…

Modern Library 100 Best Nonfiction, 46. NYPL Books of the Century, p.145. Galbraith "saw as perilous the modern economy's focus on ever-increasing production. Princeton University Press, 2004. Paperback. New. A clean crisp well preserved 2004 recent printing Princeton University Press softcover in a fine tight binding. Little to no shelf wear. Text is bright and free of marks or underlining. Fast shipping in a secure book box mailer with tracking. Henry D. Thoreau's classic A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers is published now as a new paperback edition and includes an introduction by noted writer John McPhee. This work--unusual for its symbolism and structure, its criticism of Christian institutions, and its many-layered storytelling--was Thoreau's first published book. In the late summer of 1839, Thoreau and his older brother John made a two-week boat-and-hiking trip from Concord, Massachusetts, to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. After John's sudden death in 1842, Thoreau began to prepare a memorial account of their excursion. He wrote two drafts of this story at Walden Pond, which he continued to revise and expand until 1849, when he…
