Western Photo Album. by Unknown photographer - 1890's: Horses, Sheep raising, Fancy Surrey and More

[Wyoming], 1950. Staplebound. Fine. A small photo album, in stapled wraps, with twelve shapshots (about 3.5" x 5") from a trip to Yellowstone. Printed on Kodax Velox paper, and with three cars dating from 1948-51, we can date this album to the early 1950s. Most snapshots depict typical Western natural beauty, however there are two shots of a bear coming right up to what looks like a '49 Plymouth. One shot was taken both from about 20 feet away, and also right up close, from inside the car. There's also another shot of a fawn, taken from no more than ten feet away. Some curling to the photos, else in fine condition. Rear wrap notes it was developed by "Muir Photo," a company whose name does not led itself to a simle Google search, as there is no address or location provided. But, one can presume with such a name that these images were developed somewhere between Wyoming and Northern California.

1920. Near fine. An octavo-sized photograph album, containing 55 images, each about 2.5" x 4.5", depicting a vacation to Yellowstone and some similar locales. Ladies fashions, while mostly covered by coats, seem to indicate a mid-1920s date, possibly as late as 1932 or 1933. All images are in excellent condition, fresh and bright, while mounted into corners, attached with a sparing amount of glue. Some handwritten labels in the thin borders indicate several attrations, including Old Faithful, the Canyon Hotel, Peigan Pass in Glacier Park, St. Mary's Lake (with one shot taken on a steamboat), and several others, including two close-ups of a bear. There is a delightful mix of candid portraits and sweeping views, and the photographer (in this cataloguer's opinion) had some real acuity with the camera.

YE Gallon Press, 1970. Limited Edition. #499/605. VG. Interior is tight, clean, and free of ownership marks except for one penciled notation on the flyleaf. Cloth boards show shelf and handling wear with light soiling, edge, corner, and spine wear. Overall a solid copy showing minimal signs of use. Photo is of the copy we have here at Barbed Wire Books.

Kansas City, KS: E. B. Barnett, Publisher Book. VG. Hardcover. Presumed 1st Edition. Book is blue cloth covered boards with paste-on American flag on front. The book has minor shelf edge wear with no other defects to note. No date - circa 1919. 91 pages with black and white frontis - a picture of the author in fancy dress in Washington in 1909. Married to an officer of the 2nd Cavalry in 1866, Sargent relates to experiences at Fort Bidwell, Fort Walla Walla, to Arizona. Four years at Fort Huachuca, Fort Bowie, to Fort Logan, Colorado and at Fort Wingate. .

Per the Introduction, "'The Helmet of Mambrino' well supports the claim of (Clarence) King's friends that his casual conversation often equalled the best literature of his day, for this letter to a friend was undoubtedly produced spontaneously without thought of publication." A beautifully produced small book. Neat pictorial bookplate at front pastedown; small bookseller's stamp removal scar to rear pastedown, but a Near Fine copy in a Very Good Plus (slight abrasions at opening ends) slipcase. Nice map of the Bighorn National Forest, showing the location of the Lodge. Pictures include Paint Rock Creek and Lake Solitude. Brochure, 22.5 x 10cm folded, 11pp. Black and white photographic illustrations, map, printed in red and black throughout. Illustrated, stapled wraps show light wear and rubbing with a few bent corners, else fine. Beautiful brochure advertising stays at the park, with photos of lodges, sights, wildlife, maps, and pricing. "Any railroad agent can tell you about Yellowstone National Park, or address Yellowstone Park Lodge and Camps Co." Vernon Goodwin is listed as president, taking over from Howard Hays in 1924.
