About This Item

1906. Watercolor on paper. image size 12 x 19 inches, overall frame size 21 x 28 inches. Framed and glazed. Watercolor on paper. image size 12 x 19 inches, overall frame size 21 x 28 inches. NEW JERSEY: Canal and Lock Scene , 1906. John A. Brunner (1868-1948) was born in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. His early training as an artist was under the supervision of Count Zalitsky in Westfield, N.J. He subsequently studied at the Cooper Union in New York City, and thereafter travelled extensively throughout England , France and Germany. Known for his skill and delicacy in the execution of the medium of watercolor, he was also renowned as a proficient wood carver, and today his work is to be found in many private and public collections. In this particular composition we can easily see the effect of his time spent in England and the pastoral themes that were so prevelant in the work of English watercolorists of that period.
