London, England: Picador Books, 2016. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. London, England: Picador Books, 2016. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 194 pages. The author's breakthrough debut novel. One of the most important literary debuts of our time. Limited Edition of 250 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published as a hardcover original only simultaneously with the First American Edition. As usual, the British production is exemplary and superior in every respect: Regular-sized volume format. Black hard boards with gilt titles on spine, as issued. Text by Garth Greenwell. Silver satin ribbon marker. Printed on archival stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents, in its Limited Edition format, Garth Greenwell's "What Belongs To You". What stays with you until the very end. The novel is in three parts: "Mitko", "A Grave", and "Pox", which are imbricated, but also stand on their own like novellas. "A Grave", in particular, is a tour de force: A note-perfect, forty-two-page paragraph that evokes, vertiginously, the tremor of adolescence. It shows Greenwell at the absolute top of contemporary American writing: He pulls off the single paragraph because it isn't merely a formalist, virtuoso exercise, but because his formal virtuosity brilliantly captures the narrator's delirium and anguish. He is by no means the first writer to pull off this neat triumph, but he is in canonical company: Jose Saramago did it in his masterly novels; Roberto Bolano's breakthrough novel, "By Night In Chile", which is nothing less than the whole history of modern Chile, is recounted in one 130-page paragraph by Sebastian Urrutia Lacroix, the narrator/protagonist, at his deathbed. "American literature is richer by one masterpiece" (Edmund White). An absolute "must-have" title for Garth Greenwell collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition, indicated/numbered as such on the Front Limitation Page. It is very prominently, elaborately, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Garth Greenwell. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GARTH GREENWELL TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0374288224.
