About This Item

New York: Alfred A Knopf, 1942. First American Edition . Hardcover. Good/Fair. This is a stated first American edition. The interior of the book is clean and complete, with a few signs of earlier use. A former owner has glued the front free end paper to the fixed page, and the next page has a 2 inch tear along the bottom edge as a result. The cloth covers are clean, with moderate wear overall, but a more serious 10 cm worn spot on the back cover. The dust jacket is price-clipped, and is only in Fair condition with nicks and chipping to the edges and corners. The back flap has almost separated. The attached scan shows the condition in more detail. The jacket is now in a protective mylar cover.

Synopsis

When Mrs Bradley's grandson finds an old diary in her rented cottage it attracts the interest of this most unconventional of detectives, for the book's now deceased owner was once suspected of the murders of both her aunt and cousin. Does the missing diary finally reveal what happened to old Aunt Flora? Is the case of Bella Foxley really closed? And what happened to the boys from the local reformatory who went missing at the same time? As events unfold, Mrs. Bradley faces one of her most difficult cases to date, one that will keep readers guessing until the very end…
