About This Item

New York: W. W. Norton & Company, Inc., 1954 WYSIWYG pricing--no added shipping charge for standard shipping within USA. Blue & white decorative boards, blue cloth spine with gilt titles, dec. endpapes, 185, [1] pp, chapter headpieces. Spine & edges sunned, bottom edge of boards rubbed. Chase's memoir of her childhood in the later 1890s near the coast of Maine is not written especially for children, but as she notes in the preface, "I finally reached the regretful conclusion that I was unable to write a book primarily for children. When I was a child, I did not know the difference between a book for a child and one for grown-ups. To me at nine or ten years old there was no marked contrast between The Mill on the Floss and The Five Little Peppers. Both absorbed me equally, as did The Old Curiosity Shop and Little Women. It never once occurred to me that Phronsie Pepper and the March girls had been created for me, whereas Maggie Tulliver and Little Nell with their sorrows had been written for the understanding of my elders." The title refers to the gate in the white picket fence that represented her boundary between here and there, between home and away. Shipping weight 2 lbs.. First Edition. . VG-/No dj. Illus. by Nora S. Unwin. 22 X 15 cm.
