About This Item
This is an extraordinary association copy, coming as it does from the library of noted New York book collector and dealer Eugene Delafield (1907-2001), who was known as a patron of poetry and of young poets such as Flaccus. On the verso of the half-title page is a long inscription from Flaccus dated March 13, 1951, dealing with his design of the book's title page and its recognition by the American Institute of Graphic Arts as one of the 50 best books of 1940. The book is also signed at the bottom of the front flap and at the bottom of the back cover by distinguished poet John Hall Wheelock, who succeeded Maxwell Perkins as editor-in-chief at Scribner's. As an editor, Wheelock worked with Thomas Wolfe, Marjorie Kennan Rawlings, Allan Nevins, Charles A. Lindbergh, and James Truslow Adams, and was credited with discovering such young poets as May Swenson, James Dickey, Louis Simpson, and Joseph Langland. In Flaccus' inscription to Delafield is a line that "Jack Wheelock" can vouch for Flaccus' claims to design excellent. At the inside top of the front board are some pencilled notations, likely from Delafield, noting the places of Wheelock's signatures and the date of them (Sept. 24, 1970), as well as the date of Flaccus' inscription. The book is fine. The dust jacket is close to very good-plus, with wear along the edges and tips and a one-inch scratch near the top of the spine just above the book's title. In a Brodart cover.
