About This Item
New York: Neale Publishing Company, 1916. Hard Cover. Good binding. Octavo. 410 pp., frontis, maps, plates. First edition. As issued, in orange cloth; all plates are present as called for. Spine is darkened; a significant snag and resulting closed tears to the cloth has been suitably mended; covers are a trifle soiled; contents are largely clean; hinges starting, but holding. Gift inscription from a Greenbrier manager to Granville Valentine; and later an inscription by Valentine gifting this book to "Wilton"; Wilton's bookplate on the front pastedown. Valentine was a member of a prominent Virginia family.
Krick calls this a "well written" book and notes that the author "deals primarily with the history of the place from the 18th Century to its resurgence after the Civil War. A chapter on the Battle of Dry Creek, August 27-28, 1864, will interest students of the war, as will a description of the successful effort to thwart David Hunter's eager torch" Neale Books 297.
