FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS by Hemingway, Ernest - 1940

1940. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940. Original oatmeal cloth with red bands, with dust jacket. First Edition of what is often considered to be Hemingway's masterpiece, sited during the Spanish Civil War -- also his longest work.~This is a copy from the first printing, with the "A" on the copyright page, and includes the first-state original dust jacket (with the price of $2.75 and with NO photographer's credit on the rear panel). The volume is in near-fine condition (less than usual of the flaking of the red pigment on the spine; as always the inner hinges are a little darkened due to the original glue used). The jacket is very good-plus, perhaps near-fine (very minor edge-wear, but entirely without "restoration" and with the red on the spine still bright; there is a damp-mark on the reverse side of the jacket, but it is invisible on the printed side). This is not a scarce book (as the first printing consisted of 75,000 copies), but a totally-original book with jacket in this condition is becoming increasingly scarce. Hanneman A18A.
