London: Luzac & Co, 1938. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Octavo size, 216 pp. The turn of the last century was a time of a great number of missionaries, most with only the best of intentions, visiting the far corners of the world to assist in education. Bess Allen Donaldson (1879-1974) and her husband were two such; they were both American Presbyterian missionaries and writers about Persia. During thirty years of sharing her husband's missionary work, giving Bible instruction, and teaching English, particularly to women, Bess Donaldson gathered material for The Wild Rue, a unique study of Persian folklore and myths, ranking with but based on more direct personal experience than Henri Masse's Croyances et coutumes persanes. In her book she treated such topics as the evil eye, childbirth practices, love and marriage, pilgrimage, burial practices, angels, cosmology and astronomy, names and numbers, the calendar, the Koran, the significance of flora and fauna, personal hygiene, and talismans and signs. It is indispensable to any serious student of Persia and popular Islam (n. b. - above information from iranicaonline).

___DESCRIPTION: Full light brown cloth with a very narrow blind-embossed ruled border on the front board, dark green lettering on the spine, plain endpapers, frontispiece a black and white photograph of what appears to be a necklace, publisher's device on the title page, five additional photographs scattered through the text; octavo size, pagination: (i-)-xii, 13-216 includes an Index at the rear. The dust jacket is of brown paper with green lettering on the front and spine, price was on lower corner of front flap, now clipped.

___CONDITION: Overall near fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, corners with just the slightest bend and no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright. The only prior owner marking we see is a small, circular purple stamp at the lower fore-edge corner of the front free endpaper that appears to read "Pak-American Commercial (a few illegible letters)" along the outer sphere, and inside the name of a street with "Karachi" underneath. There are a few shallow bumps to the edges of the boards and the spine, and the endpapers have started to fox, else fine. The dust jacket is very good overall, it has been price-clipped, there is minor overall edgewear, more substantial wear with some closed tears and small chips to the head and tail of the spine, however with no loss to lettering.
