Condition: Good, with previous owners bookplate on front endpaper and an inscription dated 2013, possibly from the author to the previous owner (a former curator of Dorset County Museum in Dorchester) on front endpaper. Dustjacket condition: Good, with light shelfwear.and a couple of small repaired tears around top of spine of jacket. Not price-clipped. 526pp. 25 colour and 392 b/w illustrations. This was the first biography of William Butterfield (1814-1900). Butterfield was the pioneer of the original High Victorian phase of the Gothic Revival, and the first Victorian architect to experiment with constructional colour. The book seeks, through a combined discussion of Butterfield's personality, his style, and the social situation within which he worked, to reach a new understanding not merely of Butterfield, but of the whole significance of High Victorian architecture..
