The Second UK Printing published by Methuen in October 1908 - the same month as the first printing. The BOOK is in near Fine condition and is in remarkable condition for its age. The Wrapper has protected the covers well and the gilt design remains very bright and sharp. Mild pushing at the spine ends with a tiny nick at the lower spine. A few minor small marks to the lower front board. Top edge gilt with other edges uncut as called for. The gilt remains very bright. Free from erasures and inscriptions. Some offsetting to the end papers otherwise apart from the occasional spot, the pages are in very clean condition. The Graham Robertson frontispiece and tissue guard are both present. A very sharp copy. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. It is the correct second issue with the price of 7/6 net to the front panel (differing only from the first issue design with a revised price). Some light soiling in places. Vertical light crease near the spine fold to the front panel. Some edge-wear to the spine ends and corners with a little loss (see images). Toning to the spine. Some light professional japanese tissue paper repairs along the spine folds and rear flap fold to the verso but these do not come through to the front. Colouring of the wrapper remains very good ( some of the images show the colouring more bleached than actually is). The wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. Housed in a custom solander book with gilt titling. A very sharp copy. Copies of this title rarely turn up with their original wrapper in such collectible condition. First printings with wrappers command very high prices - This provides a much more affordable alternative. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. More images available on request.

Description:
3 Vols Set : 1) The Rich Jew Of Malta (Illus. Eric Ravilious), 2) The History Of Dr Faustus (Illus. Blair Hughes-Stanton), 3) Hero And Leander (Illus. Lettice Sandford): All 3 Volumes are the correct first issue printings published by the Golden Hours Press, London between 1932-33. All three books are in near Fine condition and are in their original bindings as issued. The Golden Hours Press was founded in 1932 by Christopher Sandford and Francis Newbury, but closed after one year when its proprietors took over the Golden Cockerel Press from Robert Gibbings. These three books were the only three books that The Golden Hours Press published. All three books are in their first issue elaborate morocco bindings and not to be confused with the more commoner second issue 'Hollis and Carter' rebinding of plain green buckram which occurred when an unspecified number of the remaining unbound copies of each title were taken over in 1933 by Hollis and Carter who chose to issue such copies in a cheaper binding.… Read More

Each titled, dated and signed by Morris Cox in pencil in the lower margin. Illustrated title page, with tissue guards which are all present. All loose as issued in the original morocco backed and decorated drop back box which has gilt titling and has been cork lined by Gemma O'Connor. The Prints and Box are in Fine condition. Although the edition size was only 20 sets, five sets were broken up and sold as separate prints. Two sets are held at the V& A museum (www.jisc.ac.). 'To enjoy this brilliant work the prints should be side by side, spread across a table. Viewed thus one might suggest a large claim, as that they are among the very finest essays in colour printing produced during this century' (Chambers 26). New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
