About This Item
New York: The Viking Press, 1936. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front flyleaf by Jean Starr Untermeyer to her husband, the poet Louis Untermeyer, and accompanied by an autograph letter signed (ALS) from Jean to Louis written on her letterhead: "I am glad you liked the poems and happy at your frankness in admitting it. Almost without exception you have kept a purity in your attitude to poetry; and considering that most of our life was spent together and in service to a common ideal, I don't feel it is impertinent for me to say that I hope you will always keep that part of yourself intact." The letter is housed in the original mailing envelope, which is affixed to the rear flyleaf. The pair married in 1906 and divorced in 1926, but reunited shortly after the suicide of their son Richard, to whom this volume is dedicated. Remarried in 1929, they were divorced again the following year. Octavo. Original green cloth binding, with printed paper title labels. The dust jacket is browned along the spine, with a tiny chip to the top edge of the front panel; otherwise very good.
