About This Item

"The Man Without a Country" is a story about a man, Phillip Nolan, with a friend, Aaron Burr, who was accused of treachery around 1863. At the trial of his friend, Nolan avowed that he hoped he would never hear the words "the United States of America" again. He was thus doomed to live a secluded life on board a ship amidst the sea and he was never allowed to see, read or hear anything related to "America" again! More Info: en.wikipedia.org

This particular book is a paperback measuring 3.75" w x 5" h. On the inside cover page is a stamp that reads, "William Fox presents, As No Man Has Loved" based on Everett Edward Hale Classic". There seems to be at least 2 pages missing at the front, probably the cover pages. The book starts with the Introduction. There is a "Note" section at the end of the book with question and answers about the story characters, as well as descriptions of places mentioned. There are 2 advertisement pages at the back for other small books, another "The Man Without A Country" and "Old Glory". On the back cover is a copy of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". The printing on some of the pages tends to fade off the top of the page, almost like the pages were cut unevenly first and then trimmed up.

Synopsis

The Man Without A Country, written by Edward Everett Hale in 1863 and originally published in Ticknor and Fields’ magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, follows American Army lieutenant Philip Nolan. He renounced America during a treason trial and was subsequently sentenced to traverse the seas for the remainder of his life with no news of his country. The Man Without A Country  was first published in the December 1863 issue of  Ticknor and Fields' magazine: The Atlantic Monthly, Devoted to Literature, Art and Politics,  number 74 of Volume XII (pg 665-796 with the following two pages having an index for Volume XII). Only in the index is Hale attributed for the short story.

About Timeless Words

Timeless Words is a way for me to share my love of books! Nothing can take the place of holding words in your hands - words that will take the reader to another world! To re-read a book through the generations is a way of passing down the history and adventure of those other worlds! To me, a book is that is handed down through time is a link to past family members and allows the newest generation, who reads it, a link to the past and helping to carry on a tradition - just as family reunions and holiday rituals are! At Timeless Words we want our buyers to feel that the generation, or copyright year, of a book is not a barrier to finding it! Whether it is an educational book, or a non-fiction novel, from the 1800's to a Z- Generation children's book, we may have it! If it is not in stock - just ask for it! Timeless Words would like to offer to look for a book for you, starting with our local businesses, at no research cost to you! Come on in and take a look around! Ask if you can't find it!
