About This Item

New York: The Viking Press, 1982. First edition of Naylor's National Book Award-winning debut novel. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Jeanne Gloria Naylor." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design and drawing by George Sanders a.k.a. Sando. With an original African-Caribbean Bookstore flyer advertising the book signing event during which this copy was inscribed on Thursday, March 7, 1985 laid in. Brewster Place: a blind alley feeding into a dead end, a street few would move to by choice. Through the fractured perspectives of seven women who occupy this common ground, this remarkable work of fiction evokes intimately and powerfully the world of black women in 1980s urban America. "Hard-edged, soft-pleased," these women experience, fight against - and sometimes transcend - a world where compassionate energy is at war with implacable desolation. Naylor's debut novel, the work won the National Book Award and was was adapted as the 1989 miniseries The Women of Brewster Place and the 1990 television show Brewster Place by Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions.
