[2], iii-xvi, 17-596, [6] pp. Green cloth with gold lettering and decorations on the front board and spine; all edges decoratively spotted. Brown endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with a frontispiece, a vignette title-page, and eight plates. The plates depict portaits of a few women mentioned in this biography, and a few of the women in their battle uniform, taking part in the action on the field. Broadfoot 400. Nevins II 22. Moore mentions in the preface that the story of the U.S. Civil War cannot be completely told without relating the stories of the courageous and generous women who fought in various battles and skirmishes, perfomed espionage and other missions outside of combat, who expanded and innovated the medical care for the armies, and the women who raised money for the soldiers. Each of Moore's biographies paints an in-depth portrait of womens' contributions to the war effort. He even makes the point that the contributions of these women ought to be valued equally to those of the men who participated in the U.S. Civil War. Minor dust soiling to the pastedowns and endpapers, leaves show minor foxing.
