Description

London: Macmillan and Co., 1900-1902. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". None. An attractively bound set of novels and poems by Charles Kingsley, published between 1900 and 1902. Containing Two Years Ago, Alton Lock (Tailor and Poet), Hypatia or New Foes with an Old Face, Yeat: A Problem and Poems. Charles Kingsley (12 June 1819 – 23 January 1875) was an English priest of the Church of England, university professor, historian and novelist, particularly associated with the West Country and northeast Hampshire. All in Bumpus binding, with binder's ink stamp to verso of front free-endpaper. As a novelist Kingsley's chief power lay in his descriptive faculties. The descriptions of South American scenery in Westward Ho!, of the Egyptian desert in Hypatia, of the North Devon scenery in Two Years Ago, are brilliant; and the American scenery is even more vividly and more truthfully described when he had seen it only by the eye of his imagination than in his work At Last, which was written after he had visited the tropics. His sympathy with children taught him how to secure their interests. His version of the old Greek stories entitled The Heroes, and Water-babies and Madam How and Lady Why, in which he deals with popular natural history, take high rank among books for children. Kingsley was influenced by Frederick Denison Maurice, and was close to many Victorian thinkers and writers, including the Scottish writer George MacDonald. In half-calf bindings. Externally smart, with just a few marks to the boards and some light rubbing. Binder's stamp to the front endpaper. Some offsetting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with some scattered light spotting throughout. Very Good Indeed
