About This Item
1774. WOOLMAN, John. The Works of John Woolman. In Two Parts. Phila.: Printed by Joseph Crukshank, 1774. 1st ed. xiv,[ii],436pp. Separate title pages for each part. Contemporary calf, raised spine bands. Some scraping to leather, corners worn, light scattered foxing and toning, else very good. HOWES W-669, "aa." Evans 13782. Hildeburn 3139. Afro-Americana 11387. The first part is Woolman's Journals, one of the best colonial American autobiographies. Woolman, a Quaker minister, championed abolition early in his career and travelled extensively in the North and South advocating the release of slaves from service. His autobiography was widely hailed both in America and Great Britain as a touchstone of its genre, and it was often reprinted. "An autobiographical masterpiece, rivaled in 18th-century America only by that of Franklin" - Howes. "Woolman's teachings left a permanent imprint upon all thinking opponents of slavery, both in America and in Great Britain. His writings upon the subject, especially his Journal (1774) and his essay, Some Considerations on the Keeping of Negroes (1754) served to perpetuate his views." DAB XX: p. 517.
