ESTC citation number T89168.The collected works of Joseph Addison.Addison was an essayist, poet, playwright, and politician, active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. He is best remembered today for his essays.Addison had a lifelong friendship and professional relationship with Richard Steele, with whom he founded 'The Spectator', a daily publication than ran from 1711 to 1712.These volumes include Addison's contributions to the magazines 'Tatler', 'Spectator', and 'Freeholder', as well as his own published works such as his play 'Cato'.Bookplate of Francis Pym to the front paste down of Volume I - Pym was a British M.P. and High Sheriff, and was the great-great-great grandfather of Francis Leslie Pym, who served as the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth under Margaret Thatcher. In a full calf binding. Externally, with some light rubbing to the boards and spines. Joints are a lightly cracked. Light bumping to the extremities. Small crack to the spine label of Volume I. Chip to the spine label of Volume II, lacking the second spine label. A little loss to the head and tail of the spine of Volumes II, III, and IV. Small patch of loss of leather to the head of the front joint of Volume IV. Hinges of Volumes I and III are starting but firm. Front hinge of Volume II is strained. Front hinge and joint of Volume IV is a little strained. Bookplate and ink inscription to the front paste down of Volume I. Ink inscription to the front paste down of Volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and clean with just the occasional light spot. Very faint tide mark to the first few pages of Volumes I and IV. Small closed tear to the frontispiece of Volume I. Good
