About This Item
Berwick: John Taylor, 1800. Leather. Good. 5" by 3". None. A collection of the works of Laurence Sterne, one of the most important Anglo-Irish authors of the eighteenth century. Complete in eight volumes.A collection of the works of Laurence Sterne.Laurence Sterne was a popular Anglo-Irish novelist and clergyman of the eighteenth century, best known for his 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy', and 'A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy'. Sterne discovered his talent and love for writing late in his life, after writing 'A Political Romance' in support of his dean in a church squabble. After this, he dedicated himself to writing, beginning 'Tristram Shandy' and publishing in 1759. It was successful upon its publication, and he received a lot of praise and admiration for his work.Including a life of the author, 'The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy', 'A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy', a selection of sermons and letters, 'The Koran', and 'History of a Good Warm Watch-Coat'.'Tristram Shandy' is about the eponymous character, being a narration of his life. He spends a lot of the book going on tangents to try and explain something, resulting in him not describing his birth until Volume III out of IX.'Sentimental Journey' is Sterne's novel based on his travel experiences through France and Italy. The publication helped establish travel writing as its own genre. In a full marbled calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Some bumping to the spines and extremities, resulting in some loss to the head of the spines. Small cracks to the joints. Rubbing to the boards and spines. Front hinge of Volume I is starting but firm. Front hinge of Volume VIII is strained. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with some spotting. Good
