About This Item
Philadelphia: Henry Adams, 1830. Hardcover. Very Good -. Published by Henry Adams and sold by John Grigg; stereotyped by J. Howe. iv, 416 p.: frontispiece portrait of the author engraved by L.B. Longacre from a painting by J. Reynolds; 23 cm. Contemporary full calf with five spine compartments between raised bands. Black leather spine label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title: Stern's Works. Gilt-rolled decoration on board edges. Marbled endpaper (in blue, green, and brown). The "black page" (p. 20) is a full page of printed cross-hatching. The "marbled page" (p. 100) is covered with a sheet of pink, blue, and yellow marbled paper. Former owner's engraved stamp in lower part of title page; the handwritten center has been cut out without loss of printing. Former owner's name faintly in pencil on p. 416 with a poem about Tristram Shandy in another hand. Contents: Lif of Sterne -- Tristram Shandy -- Sentimental Journey -- Letters -- Impromptu -- Fragment -- Watch-Coat. In Very Good- Condition: leather is rubbed and scraped; joints are starting at head of spine, but hinges are solid; the excision on the title page has resulted in an additional 2 cm. tear, without impacting the printing; in the first sentence of Tristram Shandy (p. 7), the words "they begot me" have been carefully cut out; on the reverse side the words "no less read" are correspondingly lacking; lacking some of the marbled sheet, possibly due to the confusion of a former owner, but most of it is intact; lacking blank leaf preceding back free endpaper; heavily foxed in several sections; otherwise clean and tight.
