Description:
A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets…

London : Jacob Tonson, 1697 A good copy in contemporary full leather binding with frontispiece, title page in red and black inks, and 91 (of 101) full page engravings. This is the first illustrated edition of Dryden's famous translations of Virgil's works completed in 1696. The illustrations are spectacular - each dedicated to a subscriber who donated 5 guineas for the privilege. With frontispiece by M Vander Gucht (a flemish engraver working in England); title page; dedication to the Right Hon Lord Clifford 4pp; Life of Vergil 16pp; Preface to the Pastorals 12pp; Poems to Dryden 6pp; Lists of Subscribers [which also provide a plate index] 4pp; plate and text to Pastorals p 1-48; Dedication to Earl of Chesterfield 5pp; Essay on the Georgics 6pp; Georgics pp 49-147; Dedication (45pp); Aeneis
pp 201-619; Postscript to the Reader p621-623; Notes and Observations p625-640. The pagination between Georgics and Aeneis is odd in that the page numbers stop with Georgics and restart with Aeneis; the dedication is not paginated and the 'gap' is bigger than it should be (by about 10 pp). However, no content is missing from any of the sections listed. The contemporary panelled calf binding has been extensively repaired at some time, relaying what could be saved of the original calf to both boards and spine. The binding is in good condition. Internally there is a small ink signature of Jasper Radcliffe Cook to the top of the title page. There is a little worming to the bottom margin (not affecting text) which is noticeable from the title page to part way through the preface but is then a single small hole which looks like a dot. Around 4 leaves have small repaired margin tears; there is some page loss (but not content loss) from the bottom corner of pp 331 and 353 and the bottom margin of the plate at p550. The overall condition of the text and plates is good to very good. There are some browned sections, some offsetting from plates to text, and occasional marking, but text and plates are generally clean. 10 plates from the Georgics section are lacking - there is no sign that they were cut out, so it is possible they were lost prior to the point when the binding was repaired. Please enquire if you would like to see more images beyond the 5 allowed by the website.

1696 1ed John Sergeant Method to Science Philosophy John Locke Descartes IdeismJohn Sergeant was a 17th-century Catholic priest known for his controversial treatises. One such work was 'The Method to Science', a philosophical work written to object against John Locke. According to Hutton,
"Sergeant's critique of Locke was part of a more wide-ranging critique of what he called 'ideists', a category which yokes Descartes and Locke together. He targets Locke in his 'The Method to Science' [and] his principal objection to Locke's epistemology was its implicit skepticism. he charged Locke that his natural philosophy failed to provide universal conclusions or maxims".

1681 DUTCH Neyn Voyages BRAZIL America INDIANS Florida Ceremony Rituals FuneralsPieter de Neyn's "Lust-hof der Huwelyken" is a late 17th-century treatise on the ceremonial customs and rites of weddings and funerals from around the world. Neyn covers numerous cultures including natives of Brazil, Native American Indians, Southern Asia, and India, as well as African tribes. Neyn also gives attention to notable Dutch voyagers including Jan Huyghen van Linschoten.
However, the greatest appeal of this work is Neyn's consideration of the Americas. According to Sabin, this work
"[known as] The Pleasant Matrimonial Garden, treats the following American tribes: Appalachians, Brazilians, Inhabitants of Guiana, Florida, Ingas (i.e. Incas), New-Netherland, New-France, Virginia."
A highly desirable and rare 1681 first edition, complete with full-page engravings!

Description:
Glasgow: Printed by Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1769. Very good plus.. Lovely three-volume pocket edition of Dryden's translation of the AENEID, ECOLOGUES, and GEORGICS, printed by the famed Scottish Enlightenment printers, the Foulis brothers. Virgil, the great epic poet of Rome, flourished in the midst of Augustus's reign, when the Roman Republic had just become the Roman Empire. In need of appropriate founding mythology, the author put to verse the story of Aeneas as he fled the fall of Troy, loved and left Dido of Carthage, descended into the Underworld, and finally came to Italy. Virgil was required reading for intellectuals of 18th-century Scotland, just as he is for Latin students today. He was a regular source of inspiration and imitation for major Scottish artists and philosophers of the era: David Hume "devoured" him, while Robert Burns disliked the AENEID but adored the GEORGICS, which "filled my head with a thousand fancies of emulation" (letter to Mrs. Dunlop, May 1788). A pocket edition…
