London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, 1758. [Classics in Translation] FINELY BOUND, a later edition thus. Complete in four volumes. Duodecimo (17 x 11cm), pp.[8] xxiv; 335 [3]; pp.[8] 246 [4]; pp.[8] 352 [4]; pp.[8] 306 [32]. With an engraved frontispiece to each volume, a folding engraved plate showing Aeneas' shield to volume III, a folding engraved map of Aeneas' voyages to volume II, and three further plates to volume I, two folding. Reasonably sized print, with extensive footnotes, several essays, and an index to volume IV. Re-backed in the mid twentieth century in tan calf with raised bands, gilt titles to twin burgundy labels, and generous gilt tooling to spines. Incorporating the original tan calf boards; all edges and endpapers marbled. Armorial bookplate of George Crompton to front pastedown of each volume. Internally crisp and clean, with some toning and spotting to first and final few leaves of each volume. A 2cm tear along the fold of one folding plate in volume I. Hinges repaired with cream cloth. Repairs also to corners; heavy wear to original boards. A few minor marks to spines. Very good. A comprehensive edition, first printed in 1753.
